BIO

Carolyn Walton paints primarily in oil, capturing the landscapes and architecture of the Northeast and Europe.  She is inspired by the rural environment and coastal waters.  Well-known for her interpretation of hay bales, meadows and barns, her water paintings are gaining a devoted following.  Her paintings focus on the light in the landscape; the work is representational with painterly brushwork and an “atmospheric use of light and shadow.”  She paints primarily en plein air, and produces larger paintings and still lifes in the studio.

In a review of a recent exhibit, a critic described Walton’s work:

“The long tradition of American Landscape and floral painting continues to be

addressed and advanced....Walton’s paintings are the most impressive of the group,

the overall structure and simple straightforward focus of the imagery conveying a

sense of energy and spontaneity....Walton creates a lovely essay of rolling terrain

and undulating fields that radiate both with the affection she obviously feels for the

scenery she observes and for the act of painting itself”.

Exhibiting regularly in juried shows as well as invitational and solo shows, Walton has received numerous awards.  National awards include the NY Art Students' League Award in 2005 and the Frank van Steen Award in 2003  - both at the Hudson Valley Art Association National Exhibition (New York); and the Award of Merit at the annual exhibition "Impressions of New England" at the Bennington Center for the Arts.

Recently Walton had paintings accepted into a number of prestigious national exhibitions including the Salon International (International Museum of Contemporary Masters, TX); Academic Artists (Mass.); Hilton Head Arts League (SC); Hudson Valley Artists Association (NY); and the Salmagundi Club (NY).  International Artist magazine named Walton

a top 10 finalist in its competition “Seascapes, Rivers & Lakes” (June 2001).  Carolyn is a juried member of Oil Painters of America, an elected member of The Hudson Valley Art Association, and a member of Allied Artists of America.

The Curator of the State of Vermont invited Walton for a solo exhibition to help celebrate Howard Dean’s tenure as Governor in Dec. 2002-Jan. 2003. Over the years, she has had various corporate commissions, including cover paintings for the Vermont City Marathon (2003 & 1999) and five paintings for the Vermont National Country Club.  Hundreds of her paintings are in corporate and private collections worldwide.

Carolyn Walton received her BA from Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts.  She has studied painting with a number of artists and participated in national workshops, including Plein Air Painters of America.  Since 2002, Walton has taught workshops in oil painting technique.

Walton lives on the coast of Maine where she maintains a gallery and studio in Freeport (prior to this she lived in Vermont and New York).  Walton is represented by a number of galleries in the Northeast including Open Gallery in Northport, NY, Susan Powell Fine Arts in Madison, Connecticut, Vermont Fine Art in Stowe, VT and The Luxton-Jones Gallery in Shelburne, Vermont.
